Maine and Oregon have announced imposing state laws on consumer packaging. They are to be made effective from mid-2024 and mid-2025 respectively.
This legislation comes as part of the extended producer responsibility (EPR) law where the manufacturers make payments to an intermediary organization to help cover the products’ recycling and disposal costs. The new laws will entail that management costs be transferred from customers and local municipalities to manufacturers and will, consequently, encourage using sustainable packaging.
The law defines ‘consumer packaging’ to include regular containers for food and home, or personal care products; however, long-term storage purpose packages, beverage containers, paint cans, and packaging for drugs and medical devices are exempt.
