Zoom’s USD 14.7 billion acquisition of Five9 faces US regulatory scrutiny

Regulation/policy

 • Zoom’s previously announced acquisition of cloud-based call center platform Five9 is under review on national security grounds.

 • The review was requested by the US Department of Justice in a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the main US telecoms regulator. In addition to the FCC’s investigation of the deal, the reasons for the committee review, as cited DoJ’s letter, are Zoom’s ties to China, such as its base of Chinese developers and its research and development hub in China as a possible threat to US national security.

The acquisition, which was announced in July 2021 , is still expected to close in the first half of 2022 according to a Zoom spokesperson.
