Tokyo-based quantum software startup QunaSys has partnered with Toyota Motor to develop electric vehicle (EV) batteries, using quantum technology. The terms and financial details of the partnership have not been disclosed.
Both parties will research new battery materials using density-functional theory (DFT), a technique used to investigate the electronic structure of materials. The research will be carried out on Japan’s first quantum computer—launched by IBM and run by the University of Tokyo in July 2021.
Founded in 2018, QunaSys develops quantum algorithms and applications, with a focus on quantum chemistry, quantum machine learning and optimization, and error correction. The company collaborates with industry and academic partners such as Honeywell, to research and develop industry-specific software applications.
