Next-generation carbon transformation company LanzaTech has partnered with On (a Swiss shoe manufacturer) and Borealis (an Austrian renewable plastic solution provider) to produce a new foam material called “CleanCloud” for running shoes.
CleanCloud is made using carbon dioxide (CO2) as a raw material for the shoe bottom unit, specifically ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) foam that could also be used in other shoe parts and products in the future.
Under the partnership, LanzaTech will capture carbon from industrial sites and convert them to produce ethanol, which will then be dehydrated to create ethylene and later polymerized by Borealis to produce EVA foam.

Analyst QuickTake: CleanCloud is the latest of several carbon utilization pathways explored by LanzaTech in recent times. Previously, LanzaTech had partnered with L’Oreal, Unilever, and Coty to convert carbon dioxide into polyethylene bottles, laundry capsules, and perfumes, respectively. LanzaTech has also partnered with BASF, to develop n-octanol , and Twelve, to develop polypropylene from carbon emissions, in addition to its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) applications.
