Zipline, a drone-based medical supplies delivery company, has launched its on-demand drone-based delivery service in Pea Ridge, Arkansas in partnership with Walmart. The companies will deliver selected health and wellness and consumable items to eligible customers from a Walmart store in the area. This marks Zipline’s first commercial drone delivery operation in the US.

Zipline’s new Pea Ridge distribution hub, built on behalf of Walmart, will house Zipline’s drones and provide other necessary infrastructure for the service.

Eligible customers can place orders via Zipline’s app, upon which the items will be loaded onto drones at the distribution hub and delivered to residences.

Analyst QuickTake: Zipline is one of the most advanced startups in the drone delivery space, having conducted more than 200,000 commercial deliveries to date—mostly in Africa, where its primary operations are. However, the company is gradually expanding its footprint in the US, with other pilots and l ong-term commitments announced earlier this month. Before the commercial launch of this US-based service, Walmart and Zipline first teamed up in September last year to trial drone-based deliveries in Bentonville, Arkansas. Furthermore, today’s partnership adds to Walmart’s increasing interest in the drone delivery space, which is well portrayed by its series of other recent partnerships with Zipline’s peers such as Flytrex, and DroneUp.
