Gelatex, an Estonian startup developing scalable scaffolding solutions for cell-cultured meat production, has raised USD 1.2 million in seed funding co-led by Change Ventures and Crosslight Partners.
Founded in 2016, Gelatex develops nanofibrous scaffoldings for cell-cultured meat to mimic the structure of animal meat. The startup claims its solution is around 90% cheaper than the currently popular electrospun and hydrogel solutions, and it plans to bring the cost down further to EUR 40 per kg (USD 20 per lb) from its current price of EUR 1,000 per kg (USD 511 per lb) in less than five years.
