Clearview AI is cautioned about processing personal data of UK citizens; potential fine of GBP 17 million announced

Regulation/policy

  • Clearview AI, a developer of facial recognition-based solutions for law enforcement, has been issued a provisional notice to stop collecting and processing personal data belonging to UK citizens by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) upon failure to comply with UK data protection laws.

  • ICO also announced provisional intent to impose a fine of GBP 17 million (USD 22.6 million).

<ul><li>The decision was taken by the ICO in a joint investigation with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), which announced earlier this month that Clearview AI is unlawful in Australia .</ul>

  • Clearview AI has been allowed to make representations to be considered by the ICO before making the final decision, expected by mid-2022.
