Volta Trucks, a developer of fully electric trucks, has received a pre-order for 1,470 units of its 16-tonne “Volta Zero” electric truck from the German logistic company DB Schenker. This marks the largest pre-order for the company, as well as the largest for a fully electric truck in Europe to date.

Volta Trucks will also partner with DB Schenker to test Volta Zero prototypes in a real-life environment starting from mid-2022. The test results will be fed into the serial production of the 1,470 trucks, which will be deployed at 10 DB Schenker locations in five countries. The company will manufacture the units at its newly announced facility in Steyr, Austria.

As a part of the partnership, the two companies will also work together to develop specifications, conduct site testing, and fast-track deployment of the 12-tonne Volta Zero variant announced earlier this year.

Analyst QuickTake: The latest pre-order brings Volta Zero’s order book to roughly 4,500 units, with the previous largest public order being for 1,000 trucks from French refrigerated truck company Petit Forestier. Furthermore, the news comes on the heels of the company commencing production of its first road-going design verification (DV) prototype, with plans to start production verification (PV) prototypes next year.
