France’s privacy watchdog notifies Clearview AI to stop processing French citizens’ personal data

Regulation/policy

  • Clearview AI, a developer of facial recognition-based solutions for law enforcement, has been notified by the French data protection agency Commission Nationale Informatique & Libertes (CNIL) to stop processing French citizens’ personal data and to delete existing data within two months.

  • CNIL claims that Clearview AI violated General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by collecting and using biometric data without consent and without a proper legal basis as well as breaching data access rights.

  • CNIL also notes that Clearview AI is likely to face similar orders from other EU member states that adopt GDPR law.
