Nikola’s BEV gets approved for California HVIP program

Product updates

 • Battery electric (BEV) and fuel-cell electric (FCEV) truck developer Nikola Motor Company (Nikola)’s “Nikola Tre” Class 8 BEV truck is now eligible for the Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) conducted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

 • California-based Purchasers of Nikola Tre BEV trucks now qualify for an incentive of USD 120,000 per truck, which in turn reduces their cost of ownership.

Analyst QuickTake: Nikola now joins a handful of other companies to have qualified for the HVIP program, including its peer Xos Trucks’ Class 6 BEV, and incumbent Daimler’s Freightliner BEV, and Volvo’s VNR BEVs. Nikola’s current California-based customers include port trucking company Total Transportation, to whom the company supplied two trucks in December, upon receiving the order for 30 BEVs in May last year. With the news, the company might be able to secure more pre-orders from customers in California in the future.
