Sunfire acquires MTV NT to produce alkaline electrolyzers

M&A

 • Sunfire, a German electrolyzer developer, has acquired MTV NT Solingen branch, a German electroplating specialist, to expand its alkaline electrolyzer manufacturing capacity. The financial details of the transaction were undisclosed.

 • Sunfire expects to produce pressurized alkaline electrolyzers on the 100-megawatt scale. The initial 250-megawatt coating plant is planned to be operational by the end of 2022. Annual production capacity is expected to reach 500 megawatts by 2023 and one gigawatt afterward.

Analyst QuickTake: Earlier this month, Sunfire received a grant of USD 60 million to develop solid oxide and pressurized alkaline electrolyzers. The grant followed Sunfire’s EUR 109 million (USD 125 million) Series D funding round in October 2021. The MTV NT acquisition is likely to have been funded through these proceeds. Sunfire has also unveiled plans to build a large-scale alkaline electrolyzer production plant in Germany, which is to be operational by 2023.
