Upward Farms (formerly known as SEED & ROE), an aquaponic vertical farm producing microgreens and fish, announced that it is building a 250,000-square-foot vertical farm in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The farm will be constructed throughout 2022 and is expected to open in early 2023.
This would be the third vertical farm in Upward Farms’ network and would reportedly be the world’s largest vertical farm. The company claims that the new farm is 2x–4x the size of its competitors, and is expected to save 100 million gallons of water, 120 acres (5.2 million sq. ft.) of land, and reduce food transportation miles by 1.7 million annually.
The farm will supply vertically grown fresh microgreens and hybrid striped bass to markets in the Northeast US and beyond, aiming to reach 100 million Americans in a single day of distribution. Upward Farms also reported plans to continuously expand across the US from 2023 onwards.
