Aldi UK reported a ~500% YoY increase in its plant-based sales in January 2022 in light of Veganuary (an annual challenge that encourages individuals to follow a vegan lifestyle in January). Plant Menu Spicy No Chicken Burger, Plant Menu Vegan Cheese, and Plant Menu Vegan Blondies and Brownies were particularly popular amongst consumers during the period.
Aldi expanded its plant-based offering by 50% for Veganuary and expects demand to climb throughout the year. The increasing interest in plant-based was not exclusive to Veganuary, as Aldi's vegan line witnessed an over 250% YoY boost in sales in 2021.
Aldi is a budget retailer that has over 6,520 stores across 11 countries, employing over 155,000 people. Aldi UK, UK’s fifth-largest supermarket, launched its own plant-based range “I Am Vegan” in July 2019 and renamed it “Plant Menu” in December 2019. Aldi’s vegan offering includes everything from ready meals and frozen food to bakery goods and sweets, allowing it to meet rising customer demand for a wide selection of plant-based options.
