Spanish biotech startup Libre Foods raised EUR 2.2 million (~USD 2.5 million) led by Green Generation Fund and counted return investors Good Seed Ventures, ProVeg International, and Veg Capital. Other investors included Dr. Ritu Bansal-Mutalik (former director of process R&D at MycoWorks), Arturo Elizondo (CEO & founder of the Every Company), David Brandes (Peace of Meat co-founder), Arman Anatürk (FoodHack CEO), and members of the US-based Glass Wall Syndicate.
The new funds will be used to scale its mushroom bacon production in preparation for the launch in Spain slated for 2022, with a larger European launch to follow thereafter, pending regulatory approval. The company also announced plans to speed up the development of its chicken and whole meat products.
Headquartered in Barcelona, Libre Foods produces mycelium-based alternative meats using a fermentation process. The startup is creating its first product, Libre Bacon, by using the entire fungi organism to bring the taste and texture of real animal products.
