Swedish challenger bank Rocker is becoming the first financial institution in Sweden to commercially launch biometric payment cards, dubbed “Rocker Touch”, and is doing so in partnership with Idemia (a payment card manufacturer) and IDEX Biometrics (a fingerprint identification sensor provider).
<ul><li>Rocker piloted its biometric payment cards last year; however, during the pilot, the Idemia cards featured sensors from Fingerprint Cards AB (FPC; whose involvement in the commercial launch is undetermined) instead of IDEX’s sensors.</ul>
Idemia is a French company that offers a wide range of biometric identity verification solutions and payment cards. Idemia was also the second-largest manufacturer of EMV payment cards in the world, with 708 million shipments in 2019 (only behind Thales’ 1,085 million). Leveraging its expertise in payment card manufacturing and biometric identity verification, the company partnered with leading fingerprint sensor manufacturer Fingerprint Cards AB to launch Idemia’s F Code biometric payment card in 2017.
<ul><li> Analyst Quicktake: Last November, Idemia’s F Code biometric payment card, featuring IDEX Biometrics’ fingerprint sensors, received letters of approval (LOAs) from both Visa and Mastercard. Therefore, even the Rocker Touch can be used at any payment terminal across the globe that supports either payment network.
