UBQ Materials, an Israeli-based company that develops bio-based thermoplastic materials, has announced a pilot project with AmBev, the Brazilian subsidiary of the multinational brewery company Anheuser-Busch, to develop sustainable packaging solutions.
AmBev will explore using UBQ Material’s bio-based thermoplastic material called “UBQ” in producing sustainable packaging for its beverage products. The pilot project is expected to convert 1,400 pounds of non-recyclable waste into UBQ, preventing emissions of over 12,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. Upon the successful completion of the pilot, Anheuser-Busch plans to explore the option of adopting UBQ for its packaging materials across the group internationally.
For AmBev, the partnership is in line with its aim to increase recycled content in its packaging and to become plastic-neutral in its packaging by 2025 in Brazil.
Analyst QuickTake: The partnership with AmBev follows UBQ’s partnership with PepsiCo last month. UBQ has onboarded leading multinational companies as its customers, which include the likes of Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) and Arcos Dorados (franchisee of McDonald’s restaurants across Latin America). In December last year , UBQ Materials also reported that it will use the USD 170 million raised to expand globally and to build a large-scale facility in the Netherlands to meet its growing demand.
