Amazon Web Services launches carbon footprint tool

Industry news

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a carbon footprint measurement tool to calculate customer carbon emissions. The tool enables users to report, track, and evaluate carbon emissions in order to assist with carbon-reduction goals.

  • The new tool provides a dashboard for AWS Cloud users to obtain calculations by factoring in the percentage of AWS’ energy consumption from renewable sources. The tool is available for all AWS customers free of charge.

  • AWS states that the tool was developed by closely working with local customers in Australia and New Zealand and from across the globe.

  • Analyst QuickTake: AWS’ cloud services counterpart, Microsoft, has introduced a similar application (known as the Microsoft Sustainability Calculator) for Azure enterprise customers to quantify the carbon impact of each Azure subscription over time and within each data center region, along with the estimated carbon savings from running those workloads in Azure versus on-premises datacenters.
