Plant-based meat company Impossible Foods is suing Motif FoodWorks, an ingredient developer for plant-based meat, claiming that Motif has infringed Impossible’s patent by using a heme-based ingredient called “Hemami” in its beef alternatives.
According to the court filings, Motif uses bovine myoglobin as its heme source for beef alternatives, and it has breached Impossible’s patent that covers its “beef replica,” which also uses heme.
Motif’s spokesperson noted that they intend to contest this allegation since it’s an attempt by Impossible to hold back Motif while limiting competition and consumer choice.
