Ascend Elements to recycle lithium-ion battery scraps for SK Battery America

Partnerships

  • Massachusetts-based cathode material recycler Ascend Elements (previously Battery Resourcers), has partnered with SK Battery America (SKBA), a lithium-ion batteries manufacturer for electric vehicles, to recycle the latter’s battery manufacturing scraps.

  • As per the partnership, Ascend Elements will use its new 154,000 sq ft recycling facility in Covington, Georgia to recycle both cell and module lithium-ion battery scraps including high-value metals like cobalt, lithium, and nickel from SKBA’s production facility in Commerce, Georgia.

Analyst Quicktake : SKBA is just the latest addition to Ascend Elements’ growing list of customer partnerships, which includes multinational companies such as Honda and Jaguar Land Rover. To keep up with demand from its customers, the company has set a long-term target to build new facilities across North America, Europe, and Asia to process up to 150,000 metric tons of lithium-ion batteries annually (5x the capacity expected from its Covington facility).
