Rens, a Finland-based manufacturer of climate-neutral sneakers using recycled coffee grounds and plastic, has announced the launch of its new bio-based athleisure apparel collection, the “Rens Elemental Hoodie”.
The Rens hoodie material is made from 43 cups of recycled coffee grounds, 12.5 post-consumption plastic bottles, and bamboo-based viscose. Rens states that the addition of bamboo viscose results in a skin-friendly material, improving breathability while providing 42x higher UV protection compared to regular cotton. The hoodies will also be produced as climate-neutral certified in partnership with Climate Partner.
The collection comes in five colors and can be pre-ordered in the US (USD 109), the UK (GBP 85), and Europe (EUR 99) via the company’s ecommerce platform.
Rens will also provide a free limited-edition non-fungible token (NFT) with every purchase of a hoodie. The company targets to reveal 2,022 NFTs by April 14, 2022. The NFTs will be divided into three tiers: regular (2,000 tokens), rare (20 tokens), and epic (2 tokens), which will be handed out randomly to customers. The NFTs are minted on the Polygon blockchain, a sustainable blockchain alternative.
As of date, Rens has sold over 30,000 pairs of sneakers across 100 countries and has recycled more than 750,000 cups of coffee grounds and 250,000 post-consumption plastic bottles.
