Fastly acquires real-time and streaming API builder Fanout

M&A

 • Fastly, a cloud and edge services platform, acquired Fanout, a platform to build and scale real-time and streaming APIs, for an undisclosed amount. Fanout’s platform enables users to build streaming APIs such as live chat support, ecommerce, video streaming, gaming, and collaborative editing.

 • Fastly plans to integrate Fanout technology into its own network to enable Fastly users to have access to real-time app development at the edge, use their existing HTTP origin instead of maintaining a WebSocket or other push protocol messaging infrastructure, and streamline workflows.

 • Additionally, Fastly plans to integrate Fanout’s proxy into its Compute@Edge serverless offering, so users can build real-time applications within Fastly's edge network.

Analyst Quicktake: Earlier this month, Fastly expanded its Compute@Edge platform by launching its partner ecosystem , which included a number of integrations to enable customers to build new edge computing use cases. Fastly has periodically expanded the offerings of its Compute@Edge platform to make it easier for developers to build and launch websites and apps at the edge. Last July, the company introduced JavaScript (the most commonly used programming language) for the platform, months after launching new command line tools (CLI), Terraform API support, and additional language support in November 2020.
