Dominion Energy Virginia, a US power and energy company, has partnered with Form Energy and Eos Energy Enterprises, two long-duration battery startups, to carry out a battery storage pilot project that could increase the length of time batteries are able to discharge electricity to the grid.

As such, the Darbytown Storage pilot project will test two potential alternatives to lithium-ion batteries: Form Energy’s iron-air batteries and Eos Energy’s zinc-hybrid batteries.

The project, which is located at the Darbytown Power Station in Henrico County, requires the approval of the Virginia State Corporation Commission, as well as the development plan approval from Henrico County. If approved, the construction is set to begin by late 2024 and will be operational by late 2026.
