Energy Vault to set up 100 MW energy storage project in Sardinia

Partnerships

  • Energy Vault, a Swiss NYSE-listed gravity-based, long-duration energy storage company, has partnered with Carbosulcis, a coal mining company, to develop a 100 MW Hybrid Gravity Energy Storage System at Italy's largest former coal mining site.

  • The project aims to convert the Nuraxi Figus coal mine into a Carbon-Free Technology Hub using Energy Vault's EV0 gravity technology and VaultOS software. The system will combine pumped hydro energy storage with gravity energy storage, utilizing 500-meter-deep mine shafts.

  • Installation of the first modular gravity components is set to begin in September 2024, with testing of the underground component expected to be completed in 2025. The project aims to stabilize Sardinia's power grid.

  • Analyst QuickTake: This partnership follows Energy Vault signing a contract with ACEN Australia in June 2024 to provide two battery energy storage systems totaling 400 MWh in Australia. The project is expected to begin in 2024 and be operational by 2026.
