Canadian carbon capture startup Svante has partnered with chemical and material science company BASF to manufacture its proprietary sorbent material, CALF-20, for carbon capture. Svante's sorbent, made from metal-organic framework nanomaterial, can capture 95% of CO2 emitted by industrial sources using solid adsorption and low-pressure steam. The agreement with BASF will allow Svante to scale up sorbent manufacturing and implement large-scale carbon capture and storage facilities by 2030. Since 2021, Svante and BASF have collaborated to demonstrate CALF-20's resistance to oxidation and water vapor, making carbon capture more affordable.

The projects will target carbon-heavy industries such as cement, steel, hydrogen, and fertilizer, using Svante's carbon capture filter technology. The companies will work together to establish an integrated project delivery model and Samsung will also support Svante in designing post-combustion carbon capture machines.
