 <p>Boeing is laying off 438 aerospace labor union members as part of a broader downsizing plan. This decision follows financial difficulties, regulatory challenges, and an eight-week machinists' union strike.</p>
 <p>In <a href="https://apnews.com/article/boeing-layoffs-strike-airplane-factories-de637999cf525699577b42b72bff2a70"> October 2024 </a>, Boeing announced its intent to reduce its workforce by 10% (around 17,000 jobs) in the upcoming months. 438 members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), including 218 engineers, scientists, and 220 other skilled workers, are included in the first wave of layoffs, remaining on the payroll until mid-January.</p>
 <p>Boeing will provide severance packages for the affected employees, containing roughly one week’s pay per year of service, career transition assistance, and subsidized healthcare for a maximum of three months. These layoffs primarily impact workers in Washington, with a few affected in Oregon, California, and Utah.</p>

 <p>The European Space Agency (ESA) has undertaken six contracts for Greece's National Satellite Space Project to improve Greece's Earth observation skills and establish Greece as a significant entity in Earth observation. These contracts are a part of Axis-3, a project aimed at transforming satellite data into valuable insights.</p>
 <p>These contracts will inaugurate services to supervise five crucial divisions: agriculture, forests, water, land, and safety and security. Government IT infrastructure will handle the data, with Planetek Hellas being responsible for creating a unified hub for processing and distributing satellite data.</p>
 <p>The project will involve a number of Greek companies and institutions, such as AgroApps for agriculture supervision, Planetek Hellas for safety and security, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for forest supervision, TotalView for water supervision, and Geosystems Hellas for land supervision services.</p>
 <p>The project is a part of Greece's EU-funded Recovery and Resilience Facility plan, with a concentration on enhancing satellite technology, increasing satellite data exchange, and creating new job opportunities.</p>

 <p>Microsoft and NASA have partnered to create Earth Copilot, an AI tool powered by Microsoft's Azure OpenAI Service. The tool is designed to provide access to NASA's weather and climate data, which is derived from satellite imagery.</p>
 <p>With a primary goal of widespread accessibility, NASA's Copilot permits users to ask questions in plain English about satellite data concerning issues such as wildfires and climate change. The AI system is able to process data from spaceborne sensors and instruments to provide valuable insights within seconds.</p>
 <p>Currently, Earth Copilot is undergoing testing and it is only accessible to NASA scientists and researchers as part of the Transform to Open Science initiative. Although its ultimate aim is to make NASA's data universally accessible, a definite public release date is yet to be set.</p>

 <p>A space-based data provider, Spire Global, has sold its commercial ship-tracking division and maritime contracts to Kpler, a Belgian analytics firm. The deal is valued at USD 241 million, including USD 7.5 million allocated for services over the next year.</p>
 <p>Kpler is a company that specializes in maritime analytics. Through the use of space and terrestrial sensors, they track automatic identification system (AIS) transponders on passenger ships and ocean vessels. This purchase is expected to further bolster its capabilities in maritime analytics.</p>
 <p>Spire Global plans to maintain possession of its satellites, technology, infrastructure, and US government maritime customers. The revenue generated from the sale will be used to mitigate its USD 100 million debt and to fund investments in various sectors such as weather, aviation, radio frequency geolocation, and space services markets.</p>

 <p>The collaboration brings together ICEYE’s sophisticated satellite monitoring and Insurity’s geospatial tools to provide insurers with real-time information. This data aids insurers in enhancing disaster response, resources management and providing immediate assistance to policyholders.&nbsp;</p>
 <p>Insurity users gain access to credible and actionable information for any location via ICEYE’s synthetic aperture radar (SAR) constellation. This setup boosts their capacity to handle and lessen the impacts of catastrophic events effectively.</p>

 <p>Rocket Lab, a company specializing in space travel and launches, has agreed to a multi-launch deal with an anonymous commercial satellite operator. This collaboration indicates a potential move towards the full deployment of the operator's satellite network through the use of Rocket Lab's Neutron medium-lift rocket.</p>
 
 <p>The partnership includes two exclusive launches set to commence in mid-2026, facilitated by Rocket Lab's Neutron rocket at Launch Complex 3 in Virginia. The Neutron rocket is capable of carrying up to 13,000 kg to low Earth orbit, presenting alternative launch opportunities for scientific, government and commercial missions, such as satellite constellations and national safety payloads.</p>
 
 <p>The Neutron is well-equipped to cover the rising need for medium-lift launch services, with 10,000+ satellites projected to require launching by 2030 in an industry predicted to be worth about $10 billion USD. Additionally, the rocket's anticipated launch in 2025 could allow it to participate in the U.S government's National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Lane 1 program. The said contract is currently valued at $5.6 billion USD over a span of five years.</p>

Rocket Lab secures multi-launch contract for Neutron with commercial satellite operator

 <p>Boeing's spacecraft manufacturing subsidiary, Millennium Space, has delivered two identical satellites for NASA's TRACERS mission. The mission, which cost USD 165 million, aims to study the interactions between Earth's magnetosphere and solar winds.</p>
 <p>The TRACERS mission involves the integration of the two satellites for the research of magnetic fields, plasma particles, and waves as they go round the Earth. This process occurs in areas known as the polar cusp, where the magnetic field is close to Earth's surface. Managed by Millennium Space, the mission aims to improve space weather predictions and better safeguard satellites and infrastructures on Earth.</p>
 <p>After undergoing environmental testing, the TRACERS satellites will be delivered to Vandenberg Space Force Base, with plans to launch them in 2025 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 to a sun-synchronous orbit.</p>

Millennium Space delivers two spacecraft for upcoming NASA mission

 <p>Japanese satellite manufacturer, Synspective, has begun the production of small Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites at its Yamato Technology Center. This is in addition to its existing operations in Tokyo and Singapore. </p>
 <p>The Yamato Technology Center is designed to produce 12 small SAR satellites annually. It uses iterative manufacturing, a method where production data is consistently collected and analyzed to make ongoing improvements.
 <p>Synspective reports that with this new facility and collaborations with Seiren and TOKYO KEIKI, it now has an efficient production setup for its StriX SAR satellites and aims to launch a constellation of 30 satellites by the late 2020s.</p>

 <p>Japan has launched LignoSat, a wooden satellite, aboard an uncrewed Cargo Dragon spacecraft bound for the International Space Station (ISS). It will later be deployed into orbit approximately 400 km above Earth.</p>
 <p>The satellite, a 10 cm cube shape, was developed by Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry. It's largely built from honoki wood, using traditional Japanese methods, without any screws or glue. Its aim is to research wood's properties as a potential space material, especially its ability to shield semiconductors from space radiation.</p>
 <p>Developers of the wooden satellite note the advantages over common metal satellites. One advantage being it's environmentally friendly, as it can fully burn up upon reentering the Earth's atmosphere, unlike metals which might leave harmful debris in the atmosphere and oceans.</p>
