Latitude

Latitude is a game creator that uses generative AI to build interactive and dynamic worlds. Players enter the actions they want to take into Latitude’s game platforms, which generate a story based on the player’s choices, scene descriptions, conversations with characters, and, where possible, images to narrate the game’s story.

Latitude’s flagship product is “AI Dungeon,” a game that generates random storylines based on player input, allowing players to explore any scenario they wish, initially prompting players to choose a genre for their game, including fantasy, mystery, and futuristic. AI Dungeon allows players to interact via a natural language interface with the game world. These actions are not limited by options created by the game designer, as would be with traditional games, as it uses natural language understanding to allow players to input any command.

In September 2023, the company announced that it would transition to Phoenix, a re-designed and rebuilt version of AI Dungeon that aims to improve performance, stability, and device support while adding new features and experiences. This transition includes retiring the legacy version and making Phoenix the default web and mobile experience. In addition, support for Voyage, a platform for building AI-driven games, will be paused to focus efforts on AI Dungeon. The team is also delisting the AI Dungeon Steam app, but will ensure that users retain the benefits they have purchased. Feature requests and bug reports will be centralized on Discord to streamline communication and prioritize player feedback during the transition.

Latitude’s AI dungeon operates using large language models (LLMs) built by AI21 Studios to generate its story text. Additionally, it incorporates ChatGPT, provided by Microsoft Azure, to improve the storytelling experience. In September 2022, the firm integrated Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion model for image generation.
