Docker is an open-source platform that enables users to build, test, and deploy AI applications. The platform packages and runs AI applications into containers that comprise components such as the libraries, system tools, and code. Docker helps to train and run ML models on different operating systems and streamlines the containerization and implementation process to deploy ML models into production. The company also offers an open-source desktop application that allows developers to create applications and test code and an app store that allows developers to download application components which are packaged as containers.The platform is available under a SaaS subscription model starting from USD 5 per user per month and includes a free plan with limited features. In addition, it offers Docker Build Cloud, a service that allows development teams to complete their image builds in the cloud, starting at USD 5 per seat/month for 200 build minutes. It utilizes smart caching and predictive technology to improve build speeds by up to 39x.

In June 2023, Docker acquired Mutagen IO, the developer of the open-source Mutagen file synchronization and networking technologies. Mutagen’s technologies, when combined with Docker’s existing developer tools, enable developers with local and remote containerized development. In addition, Docker acquired AtomicJars, an early-stage startup that has built a commercial container testing platform. Through the acquisition, Docker aimed to strengthen its position in the market and expand its offerings to developers working on projects before they go into production.

The company launched Docker Build Cloud, a service that allows development teams to complete their image builds in the cloud, with build speed improvements of up to 39x. These speedups are achieved through smart caching and predictive technology. Additionally, the system provides transparency around cache utilization, with the potential option of selecting different cache sizes. Other planned features include the ability to track time savings made from remote builds as well as integrated functionality with other Docker products for enhanced security and efficiency.

Key customers and partnerships

As of January 2024, the platform was used by more than 20 million developers, with notable customers such as Adobe, Netflix, PayPal, Stripe, Splunk, Verizon, and Target. As of March 2023, the company served more than 70,000 commercial customers, including more than 79% of the Fortune 100 and a majority of the top technology companies, banks, retailers, media, and healthcare companies.

Funding and financials

In March 2022, the company raised USD 105 million in a Series C funding round led by Bain Capital Ventures at a valuation of USD 2.1 billion. The funds were utilized to accelerate investments in its product and go-to-market initiatives, such as increasing investments in developer productivity, trusted content, and ecosystem partnerships and investing in new channels and geographies.

In March 2023, Docker reported that its annual recurring revenue (ARR) increased more than 30x in the past three years.
