Mangata Networks

Mangata Networks is a global, satellite-enabled network services and intelligent edge computing company.

As of March 2024, the company was innovating with a unique architecture that combines highly elliptical orbit (HEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellations with terrestrial MangataEdge™ micro data centers. This approach aims to extend cloud capabilities to the edge of the network, ensuring scalable, affordable, and accessible connectivity for both business-to-government (B2G) and business-to-business (B2B) clients globally. Mangata's mission focuses on transforming how the world interacts with information, striving to provide universal access to data exchange and knowledge​​.

The company planned for initial community networks to be deployed in 2023 and to launch its services for the entire Northern Hemisphere in 2024 with 8 HEO satellites. After the initial launch, Mangata planned to launch an additional 24 MEO satellites to increase its overall system capacity and thereby provide access to cloud technology, backhaul, IoT services, and 5G coverage to end users around the globe. The company planned to expand its coverage globally thereafter, using 791 satellites.

The first trial networks were to be implemented in South Korea, the 5G Open Innovation Lab in Seattle (of which Mangata is a member), and the Scotland 5G Centre in the UK. It is also headquartered in the US, with operations in the UK, Singapore, and South Korea.

In December 2022, it announced that it would be building a hub for R&D, satellite manufacturing, space systems, and intelligent edge compute solutions in Scotland.

Key customers and partnerships

In December 2023, Mangata Networks entered a partnership with Microsoft to develop an AI-enabled edge cloud solution. The partnership combines Microsoft’s generative AI and data analytics capabilities with Mangata’s satellite network to extend the geographical reach and functionality of Azure adaptive cloud. The solution offers a range of features, including edge network routing, remote bandwidth optimization, workload management, real-time data processing, digital twin support, advanced satellite backhaul management, and end-to-end cloud-edge IoT applications, among several others. Furthermore, in February 2024, Mangata Networks entered a strategic partnership with Avanade to co-develop global Microsoft AI-enabled edge-to-cloud services with satellite connectivity.

Funding and financials

In December 2022, Mangata Networks secured USD 100 million in debt financing backed by Scottish Enterprise, Scotland's main economic, enterprise, innovation, and investment agency. The funds were earmarked for the development of a satellite manufacturing plant at Prestwick, Scotland.

In June 2023, Mangata Networks received an investment for an undisclosed amount of KT SAT. This investment allowed KT SAT access to end-to-end cloud-based solutions powered by a global satellite and terrestrial network.
