Portbase is a non-profit organization that serves as the digital platform for facilitating efficient data exchange and core logistics processes in the Dutch ports. It operates both as an IT company and a logistics service provider, connecting various stakeholders such as terminals, shipping lines, transporters, and government agencies through its Port Community System (PCS).
The PCS acts as a central hub where data related to logistics operations can be securely shared and reused, ensuring transparency and enabling streamlined processes. It eliminates redundancies by providing a "single source of truth" with industry standards, allowing all parties to work with consistent data. Key features include digital submission of mandatory notifications, data sharing between companies, management of access rights, and financial settlement services.
Portbase's neutral position as a non-profit entity builds trust within the port community. It follows six guiding principles focused on clearly defining its role, collaborative decision-making, cost transparency, simplifying processes, safeguarding data ownership, and fostering collective value creation through data sharing.
In March 2024, Portbase achieved national coverage for all Dutch seaports by linking with North Sea Port's terminals in Vlissingen and Terneuzen, enabling data reuse across the entire port community. Additionally, it launched a new system in June 2024 for real-time tracking of goods movement between terminals in the Port of Rotterdam.
As part of enhancing cybersecurity, Portbase collaborated with the Port of Rotterdam Authority and other partners in May 2024 to establish the first scalable quantum internet connection in the port area, leveraging quantum encryption for secure data transmission.
Key customers and partnerships
Portbase has established collaborations with several entities to optimize data flow and connectivity. In May 2024, it partnered with RheinPorts Information Services (RPIS) to digitally link the maritime and inland port communities, aiming to streamline data exchange between Dutch seaports and inland ports along the Rhine.
Furthermore, Portbase has joined forces with North Sea Port, a significant port company in the region, to integrate data from its terminals in Vlissingen and Terneuzen into the PCS.
