Headspace

Headspace is a digital wellness company that delivers meditation programs through a smartphone app. It entered the XR space in March 2024, launching its Headspace XR app in partnership with Nexus Labs, available on the Meta Quest store.

The app, which offers mixed reality and VR experiences, provides guided mindfulness and meditation exercises led by the same instructors familiar to regular Headspace users. The exercises cover activities such as breathing techniques, body scans, and mood tracking. Additionally, it offers single or multiplayer experiences, which incorporate social elements, including interactive metaverse-style gaming in vivid environments.

The company stated that Headspace XR was designed to engage younger generations, particularly Gen-Zers, through a new medium of delivering mindfulness practices. Headspace was to conduct a randomized control trial later in 2024 to evaluate how the app aids users with social health and connection, as well as perceived and objective stress, at Virginia Tech.

Headspace generates revenue via digital purchases of its platform, priced at USD 30.

Funding and financials

In July 2023, the company raised USD 105 million in debt funding from Oxford Finance. The funding was set aside to develop and enhance the company's platform, with a focus on its enterprise offerings, such as in-person clinical care capabilities, substance use disorder support, and next-generation EAP services.
