Top Tier Foods

Top Tier Foods is a Canadian food company that specializes in developing plant-based specialty foods including a Wagyu beef alternative (Waygu), a Masago (Capelin egg) alternative (Tosago), and a caviar alternative (Cavi-art).

Waygu, claimed to be the world’s first plant-based Wagyu style beef, is made using traditional Japanese cooking methods and ingredients such as rice wine, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic.

In April 2024, Wamame Foods launched Outlier Protein, which claims to contain 64% more protein than regular ground beef and uses only seven ingredients.

Key customers and partnerships

In December 2022, the company announced the addition of Teja Foods and Sierra Meat and Seafood to its consortium. Along with the new partners, the consortium leveraged its early success to invest in R&D partnerships with the University of British Columbia and the Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Center.

In June 2023, Wamame Foods partnered with Canadian pizza chain Panago Pizza to launch two new vegan pizzas featuring its Waygu teriyaki beef strips.

Funding and financials

In November 2021, a consortium consisting of Wamame Foods, Top Tier Foods subsidiary, and three other industry players secured USD 6 million (CAF 7.6 million), to develop, manufacture, and distribute plant-based, non-soy alternative Wagyu beef and pork products. The new plant-based products were slated to roll out in 2022 under a co-branded private label and sold throughout Europe, Asia, and North America.
