OceanWings, formerly known as AYRO, is a company that specializes in wind-assisted ship propulsion systems. Their flagship product is the OceanWings Wingsail, a semi-rigid or rigid sail system designed to harness wind power and reduce fuel consumption for various types of ships, including tankers, bulkers, pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs), and cruise ships. The Wingsails feature a unique "two flap variable camber" design, which has proven to deliver fuel savings across diverse operational scenarios and environmental conditions.
One of the key differentiators of OceanWings' technology is its "safety-by-design" flag mode, which automatically protects the Wingsails and the vessel when wind or sea conditions exceed specific thresholds. The product range also offers critical configuration options, such as a tilt mechanism to address air draft requirements and an elevator mechanism specifically designed for container ships to comply with port operation constraints while minimizing the impact on container capacity.
In June 2024, OceanWings announced an expanded Wingsail portfolio at Posidonia 2024, designed to adapt to the cargo needs of ships of most types or sizes. This followed a successful design, manufacturing, and commercialization phase over the previous six years, culminating in the launch and commercial operations of the Canopée RORO cargo ship equipped with four fuel-saving OceanWings Wingsails in 2023.
