UK-based Bboxx provides off-grid home solar power systems designed to overcome inadequate access to energy in developing markets. The company has a range of plug-and-play home solar power systems for households and micro-businesses. In January 2024, Bboxx moved its headquarters from London to Kigali, Rwanda in line with its commitment to Africa.

The bPower50 has a 50 W solar panel coupled with a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery that is capable of providing up to 100 Wh of electricity daily. The bPower60 has a 20 W solar panel coupled with a LiFePO4 battery that is capable of providing up to 63 Wh of electricity daily. In June 2023, Bboxx launched a new range of solar home system in four modular variations, offering 80 to 240 Wh of battery capacity (bPower80: 80 Wh, bPower120: 120 Wh, bPower160: 160 Wh, bPower240: 240 Wh).

Key customers and partnerships

As of January 2023, Bboxx served nearly 3.6 million people, across 10 African countries and Pakistan.

Bboxx has partnered with EcoEnergy since 2017 to provide bPower50 solar home systems in Pakistan. In September 2022, Bboxx acquired PEG Africa, a company that finances and deploys solar power to households and SMEs, to become the leading super platform for essential products and services in Africa. During the same month, Bboxx partnered with Unilever through its Sunlight brand to accelerate access to clean energy across Kenya. In December 2023, Bboxx partnered with Kuwait-based EnerTech to establish an electrification initiative worth up to USD 100 million that aims to expand Bboxx's impact across 11 markets in Africa.

Financials and funding

In November 2022, Bboxx secured a loan of EUR 11 million (~USD 11.5 million) from the Off Grid Energy Access Fund which will support the company’s efforts of distributing solar home systems to last-mile customers in Togo. Prior to this, in August 2019, Bboxx raised USD 50 million in a Series D round led by Mitsubishi. The funds were part of Bboxx’s global expansion efforts.
