Founded in 2021, Impact Food develops plant-based seafood, trying to replicate the flaky texture and aroma of real seafood by only using plant-derived ingredients. The company claims its product has a meat yield of at least 80% compared to a yield of 65% from its animal counterpart.
The company’s flagship product, Impact Tuna, is made using pea protein, algae, and beet juice. It claims to have all nine essential amino acids and be rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Apart from the tuna product, it also has mollusks and crustaceans in the pipeline. Impact Food intended to supply its plant-based tuna to the food service sector as an alternative to real tuna to be used in dishes such as poke, sushi, and ceviche.
In June 2024, Impact Foods debuted a sushi-grade plant-based salmon at two Word Ocean Week events in New York City and Tokyo. It utilizes a proprietary texturization technology to provide a texture and taste similar to that of conventional seafood.
Key customers and partnerships
In June 2023, Impact Foods partnered with the fast-casual poke brand, Pokeworks, to bring its tuna products to a wider consumer base. The company intended to leverage the consumer feedback from Pokeworks launch to refine its product to suit a wider audience.
Funding and financials
In August 2022, the company netted USD 500,000 in an angel and VC funding round, out of which USD 150,000 was contributed by the Ahimsa Foundation. Additional backers of the round included Future Food Fund and Serpentine Ventures. The funds were intended for additional hiring and R&D efforts, as it geared up for a pre-seed round of funding.
