Fleetzero is a New Orleans-based startup aiming to decarbonize the shipping industry through electrification. Founded by a team of US Merchant Marine Academy graduates, the company is developing a fleet of long-range electric cargo ships that operate on a battery-swapping system.
Instead of using large container ships with vast fuel capacities, Fleetzero's approach involves smaller vessels carrying 4,000-5,000 containers each. These ships are powered by modular two MWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs housed in ruggedized 20-foot shipping containers. When a ship arrives at port, its depleted battery containers are swapped out for fully charged ones using the same cranes that handle cargo.
This battery-swapping model allows for fewer batteries per ship while maintaining the ability to move the same amount of cargo. It also eliminates the need for costly shoreside charging infrastructure, as the battery containers can be charged at warehouses or local utilities. By removing the diesel engines, fuel tanks, and ballast water systems, Fleetzero's ships gain additional cargo capacity compared to conventional vessels.
The startup's innovative battery technology prioritizes safety, incorporating fire prevention and durability features to withstand the harsh marine environment. Fleetzero plans to begin by converting existing ships, with the first prototype vessel scheduled for launch in mid-2023. The company aims to commence commercial operations in 2025, initially focusing on coastal routes before expanding to transoceanic shipping.
