Biofluff is a French startup that develops plant-based fur to replace animal and plastic fur used in the luxury fashion industry. The company’s patented product, Savian, is created using agricultural waste and plant fibers, such as nettle, hemp, and flax, and can be tuned for characteristics that include density, volume, length, texture, color, pattern, and finish. It is free from plastic and chemicals and is fully biodegradable. The material is available in rolls of 1.2 m and 1.5 m in width. The company claims that it is the first to produce 100% natural bio-based fur.
Biofluff claims its process reduces CO2 emissions by 40%–90% compared to synthetic fur alternatives. Biofluff sources its fiber in Europe, with two tons secured in 2023, and the company reports the ability to produce more than 1,000 sq m a week.
