Metatheory, founded by Kevin Lin (co-founder of Twitch), is an interactive technology and entertainment company developing Web3 games, interactive content, and social experiences. The company’s offerings include its sci-fi gaming metaverse, Duskbreakers, that uses a play-to-mint (P2M) model to reward players with NFTs. Duskbreakers offers three game modes, including Classic Mode—a looter shooter simulator; Beast Battler Simulation—a shooter simulation with four different evolved forms of an alien species; and Twilight Shift—a roguelike dungeon crawler video game, where players quest for precious materials in a spaceship. NFT types include playable characters, in-game species, and “Gribble” Eggs with different rarity traits. "The Gribble Eggsperience" in the game allows players to mint a Gribble Egg and level it up through missions such as video games, reading a visual novel, and reading lore. The Gribble Eggs will hatch into full-sized Gribbles, which will be usable in future experiences.
The company’s DuskBreakers NFTs can be purchased via OpenSea, and range in price from ETH 0.03-5 (~USD 70-12,300 as of January 2024). Holding the NFT will allow players to influence the development of the DuskBreaker metaverse and upcoming Metatheory experiences.
As of May 2022, the game had a community of 20,000 players. At launch, the company released a collection of 10,000 DuskBreakers NFTs that sold out within six days. The game is compatible on Windows, Mac, and Linux via its launcher or web browser.
Funding and financials
In a funding round in May 2022, the company raised USD 24 million in Series A funding led by Andreessen Horowitz. Funding utilization remained undisclosed.
