Electra Battery Materials (Electra) is a Canada-based company that specializes in the recycling of lithium-ion batteries for the EV battery supply chain. The company has developed a proprietary hydrometallurgical process to recover critical metals, including nickel, cobalt, and manganese, from black mass material.
In July 2023, Electra announced the first customer shipment of nickel-cobalt produced from recycled battery material at its refinery complex, north of Toronto. As of March 2024, the company is focused on developing a cobalt sulfate refinery and a black mass demonstration plant. Once completed, the company anticipates producing over 2,000 metric tons per annum of mixed hydroxide precipitate from ~4,500 tons of black mass.
Key customers and partnerships
In November 2023, Electra partnered with Canadian mineral exploration company Rock Tech Lithium, to recycle lithium from used batteries. In July 2023, the company extended its battery-grade cobalt supply deal with LG Energy Solution, providing 3,000 tons of cobalt in 2025 and 4,000 tons annually through 2029, totaling 19,000 tons, under a specified pricing mechanism.
Funding and financials
In August 2023, Electra secured CAD 15 million (~USD 11 million) under brokered private placement, to advance its black-mass recycling strategy and cobalt refinery, for working capital to repay existing debt, and for general corporate purposes.
Electra reported revenue of CAD 51.7 million (~USD 38 million) and a net profit of CAD 5.3 million (~USD 3.9 million) in FY2023.
