Pyrowave is a Canadian plastic and chemical recycling company that uses a patented high-powered microwave catalytic depolymerization technology to convert polystyrene (PS) or styrofoam into virgin quality resins that are identical to fossil-fuel plastics, which the company reports to be 99.8% pure. The technology recycles post-consumer and post-industrial plastics, such as packaging and food containers by shredding them and removing contaminants using microwave reactor equipment that is capable of producing 1,000 tons of recycled plastic per year (as of March 2024).
Pyrowave both licenses its process and sells equipment and services outright to industries, including packaging, transportation, electronics, and construction. The company claims that its technology can produce a liquid yield of nearly 98%.
In November 2023, Pyrowave introduced its Nanopurification Technology, enabling the simultaneous removal of various contaminants.
Key customers and partnerships
In November 2020, Pyrowave entered into a joint product development agreement with tire manufacturer Michelin in France to produce tires and related products with recycled plastic and further deploy its technology across Europe. In September 2023, Pyrowave, Michelin and Knauf Industries, a packaging manufacturer, announce the first finished products made from 100% plastic waste recycled using Pyrowave technology.
Funding and financials
Pyrowave received a USD 7 million credit facility from the Quebec Government as funding under its ESSOR Program in November 2021. The fresh funds were to be allocated to expand the company’s pilot plant in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Canada.
