Natural Cycles offers an at-home fertility test kit, which includes an oral basal thermometer. The app’s algorithm predicts ovulation and fertility windows. It is primarily used as a rhythm method contraceptive, and is a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and EU certified digital birth control app.
The effectiveness of the algorithm relies on the frequency of user added data. The company claims its app offers around 93% efficacy as a birth control. In April 2020, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Natural Cycles expanded the app to track Covid-19 symptoms. The company received FDA clearance to integrate third-party wearable devices such as the Oura smart ring into its fertility algorithm to predict ovulation, becoming the world’s first wearable birth control in July 2021.
Although the company initially used only basal body temperature, in October 2020, the app was made compatible with data generated from wearables and third-party thermometers. Compatibility with wearables allows the app to use the data from the wearable without the user having to manually check their temperature orally and input the data to the app.
The company plans to develop its own wearable technology for its FDA-cleared NC app which currently integrates with the third-party wearable technology, Oura Ring. The app is certified as a contraceptive in Europe, Australia, and Singapore.
