Ayana Bio is a plant cell culture technology company that produces bioactives from ingredients such as saffron, ginger, blueberries, and cacao to be used in food ingredients, dietary supplements, and nutritional beverages.
In January 2023, Ayana Bio committed USD 3 million to accelerate the production of cocoa bioactives for food, beverage, and dietary supplement applications through cell culture. Ayana Bio claims that its extensive library of cocoa cell lines with detailed genetic and metabolomic profiles will enable the efficient selection of superior cocoa lines for the production of molecules. Ayana Bio's cocoa bioactives were expected to be ready for commercialization by 2024. In April 2023, the company launched plant-cell cultured lemon balm and echinacea health and wellness ingredients for dietary supplement formulations for sleep and immune support in the US market. In October 2023, the company expanded its Plant Cell Advantage (PCA) health and wellness ingredients to include Dog Rose, Hedge Nettle, and Sage.
In July 2023, Ayana Bio opened a new lab in Boston's Seaport District, which would produce plant-cell-derived ingredients for the dietary supplement, food and beverage, and sports nutrition markets, with the ability to accommodate multiple cell lines simultaneously.
Key customers and partnerships
In May 2023, Ayana Bio partnered with Robertet for SynBioBeta to create product prototypes for functional gummies using ingredients derived from cultured plant cells such as lemon balm and echinacea purpurea. Wooree Green Science to develop affordable and agriculture-free saffron for health and wellness products in the South Korean market.
Funding and financials
In September 2021, Ayana Bio was launched by Ginkgo Bioworks with USD 30 million in Series A funding provided by Viking Global Investors and Cascade Investment.
