PoLoPo is a food-tech company developing a plant bio-factory for high-scale, custom-made production of proteins. The company’s proprietary technology allows proteins to be expressed in potatoes in a scalable, cost-effective way. The company claims its ovalbumin (the primary protein found in egg white, making up approximately 55% of the total protein) will be identical to chicken egg ovalbumin in terms of functionality, nutritional value, and protein sequence.
In March 2024, the company unveiled its molecular farming platform SuperAA, which uses metabolic engineering to convert potato plants into protein-producing micro-biofactories. As its initial products, the company was developing ovalbumin and patanin, which offer various Food Tech applications, including developing plant-based eggs and dairy alternatives. Following this, in May 2024, the company applied for a Regulatory Status Review (RSR) from the US Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service for its platform.
Key customers and partnership
In October 2024, the company partnered with global ingredient tech company CSM Ingredients to develop egg protein powder from potatoes for commercial baking applications.
