Sol is the developer of the Sol Reader, a VR headset designed specifically for reading. The device aims to create a distraction-free environment by isolating the user's focus on the text. The Sol Reader, weighing 104g uses side-lit, e-ink displays with a resolution of 256x256 per eye, similar to Kindle devices. It comes with a remote control and charger, offers up to 25 hours of reading time on a full charge, and has 64MB of storage for books. The device includes a diopter adjustment feature, eliminating the need for additional vision correction for most users. Additionally, a moldable silicone nose bridge provides a comfortable fit to the user, with a light sensor that adjusts the screen to ambient light. Users also have the option of picking between four different finishes for the headset (black, rose gold, silver, and dark blue).
The company also provides the Sol mobile app, which allows users to deliver DRM-free books, articles, and newsletters to the reader. The app also provides access to settings, accounts, and tech support. Additionally, the app stores any bookmarks made during reading, which can be shared on social media or texted to friends.
Priced at USD 350, the company has initiated the shipment of an “advanced copy” or private beta version of their glasses to a select group of early access testers. However, details of when an official product launch will take place remain undisclosed, although a waitlist for the product was available as at June 2023. The company also offers a carry case for the device at USD 40. The Sol Reader maintains peripheral vision for users, with the company noting that it is developing an accessory for those seeking deeper immersion.
