Super League Gaming (SLG) is an esports experience platform that offers gamers the opportunity to connect with other gamers. It allows players to watch live broadcasts and gameplay highlights across digital platforms as well as take part in competitions. The platform hosts leagues in partnership with the publishers of games such as League of Legends, Minecraft, and Clash Royale, with each Super League season culminating in its City Championship tournaments. SLG’s gaming patent portfolio includes one for user-requested content customization capabilities to deliver a unique stream with location-specific content, data, graphics, player or host recommendations, camera views, and targeted advertising. It also has a patent for a single live broadcast serving multiple content streams. In December 2020, the company announced the launch of “Virtualis Studios,” a virtual production platform.
SLG announced the acquisition of the livestreaming platform Mobcrush in an all-stock deal (worth USD 87 million) in March 2021. Mobcrush offers mobile broadcasting capabilities across platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook, simultaneously. Through the acquisition, SLG aimed to leverage Mobcrush’s streaming and AI-driven gameplay highlights technology to enhance Virtualis Studio, its visualization, and a cloud-based remote video production platform. It also acquired Bloxbiz, an in-game advertising platform for Roblox, for USD 17.5 million in October 2021. Through the acquisition, SLG hoped to diversify its revenue streams and expand its product offering in the 3D in-game advertising space.
Key customers and partnerships
To expand their offerings in esports event support and improve the quality of the esports events produced by the studio, SLG announced a partnership with Production Resources Group (PRG), a provider of entertainment and event technology, in September 2021.
Funding and financials
The company announced the completion of two private financings of convertible preferred stock in May 2023 , raising ~USD 23.8 million in gross proceeds between November 2022 to May 2023 . SternAegis Ventures acted as the exclusive placement agent. The capital raised was used to pay off the company's debt and support ongoing operations and growth initiatives.
In FY2022, its total revenue recorded significant growth—up 69% YoY to USD 19.7 million. The revenue growth was primarily driven by growth in advertising and sponsorship revenue. The company witnessed a 21% YoY increase in direct sales advertising revenue generating customers, coupled with a 26% YoY increase in average revenue per customer in FY2022. SLG’s gross profit grew 66% YoY to USD 8.5 million but large impairment charges drove GAAP operating losses to USD 85.0 million in FY2022.
The company did not provide guidance for FY2023, but it was revealed that over the next few years, SLG would be targeting USD 100 million in annual recurring revenue with a gross margin in the low to mid-60s.
