Awevo Foods, founded in 2022, is a Spanish producer of plant-based egg alternative products. It was formed by Javier Redondo and Erika Reyes as an R&D project in the kitchen of the plant-based restaurant Frutas Prohibidas in central Madrid.
In June 2024, Awevo launched its first product, liquid eggs, made from potato protein for the hotel, restaurant, and cafe/catering (HORECA) industry. Available in 400 ml and 1,000 ml formats, the liquid eggs claim to mimic the taste, texture, and appearance of chicken and eggs and are also free from saturated fats and cholesterol. According to the company, its production process is more sustainable compared with chicken egg production, emitting 90% less GHG, consuming 83% less land, and 95% less water.
Key customers and partnerships
In June 2023, Awevo Foods, along with five other startups, were chosen to participate in the Food Tech Challengers program led by Spain’s non-profit National Center for Food Technology and Safety (CNTA). The company worked collaboratively with the CNTA to improve its plant-based egg by extending its shelf life.
In February 2024, Awevo became part of KM Zero Venturing’s Flexitarian Project, where several food startups collaborated with the project’s promoters working toward increasing the availability and visibility of plant-based products.
