Turo (formley RelayRides) is a car-sharing marketplace that allows owners to lease their cars through its platform. Hosts can list their vehicles, manage availability, and adjust prices to respond to market demands. Renters have the ability to search for vehicles based on location, type, price, intended use, and other criteria to find the ideal car for their needs. The platform features integrated messaging, payments, and fraud detection, as well as the “Turo Risk Score” introduced in April 2020 to implement real-time, risk-based trip fees. Renters can access a wide range of vehicles including trucks, vans, minivans, and SUVs, in over 9,500 (June 2022) cities across the US, Canada, and the UK.

Turo generates revenue through commissions charged based on the total trip price, varying from 2.5-100%, a flat fee of USD 15 and value-added services fees for additional services, such as protection. Turo had more than 125,000 active hosts and 250,000 active vehicles (as of June 2022) and 1.3 million active guests (as of September 2021).

Turo also announced expansions into France—which coincided with the acquisition of its competitor, OuiCar, with the hopes of assimilating OuiCar under the Turo umbrella in the future—and Australia (including Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, and Brisbane) in 2022. Turo was backed by Daimler (now known as Mercedes-Benz Group) in its USD 90 million Series D funding round in 2017. At the same time, it took over Daimler’s car-sharing business, Croove, which initially launched in Germany in 2016, but was shut down in 2020.

Key customers and partnerships

In August 2024, Turo entered into a multi-year partnership with Uber to integrate Turo's vehicle selection into the Uber app. Previously in May 2022, Turo joined forces with Capital One, allowing credit card holders to receive enhanced rewards when making bookings through Turo. Other partners include Delta Airlines, vehicle and driving data business IMS, Auto Rental ETC, Michelin Guide, and the Quebec Electric Vehicle Association.
