Medivis is a medtech company that offers two key AI-backed AR platforms; (1) SurgicalAR for surgical imaging and (2) AnatomyX, an AR anatomy lab and learning platform.

SurgicalAR is an AR platform that overlays 3D images onto a patient's body, aiding in the precise planning of procedures across medical fields such as neurosurgery, orthopedics, and reconstructive surgery. The platform's ability to render patient-specific MRI and CT imaging holographically provides a view of the patient's internal anatomy, being able to process any patient's data in 10 seconds or sooner, applicable in areas like oncology, trauma, vascular anomalies, and congenital malformations. The system operates on Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 headset, with the platform's hand gestures enabling users to manipulate patient data through the use of hand tracking, erasing, painting, cutting planes, cropping, window sliders, brush tools, and more.

The company offers two workstation solutions: the SurgicalAR PRO Workstation and the SurgicalAR Mini Workstation. The PRO Workstation, designed for operating room applications features a 32” multi-touch display and is an FDA-approved solution with integrated hardware for holographic rendering of patient-specific data.The Mini Workstation, intended for ICU and bedside procedures, is a compact, FDA-approved solution that integrates a multi-touch 17" display. 

AnatomyX is an AR and spatial computing software designed to enhance learning outcomes and engagement in educational institutions. The software is compatible with HoloLens 2 and Magic Leap’s headsets and features 5,000+ detailed anatomy models, each designed in-house in 3D to meet industry standards. Key platform features include multi-user sharing capabilities, which allows for a shared AR learning experience; anatomy information, with models supported by up-to-date facts and figures about anatomy functions, and a custom learning portal that allows users to create classrooms, assign instructors, construct quizzes, and review students' progress in a central location. In a term test carried out, the company noted that students using the software reported a one to two-letter grade improvement, with 95% stating that their learning was enhanced. 

As of January 2024, Medivis noted that multiple additional features for its platform were under development. These include a holographic cranial navigation system that uses three registration techniques to align CT and MRI imaging with a patient's body (in  beta); a Spine Navigation system to assist surgeons in placing pedicle screws and interbody devices; and an ultrasound AR software for patient body imaging.

Key customers and partnerships

As of January 2024, 500+ surgeries were planned and rehearsed through its SurgicalAR platform, having been deployed in 40+ hospitals and medical schools. 

Key institutions include Veterans Health Administration, Lenox Hill, MD Anderson, UPMC, and Swedish Providence Neuroscience Institute. Additionally, the company’s AnatomyX platform recorded 40+ institutions with 2,000+ active users.

In February 2020, Medivis partnered with the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Verizon, and Microsoft to deliver the VA’s first 5G-enabled, clinical care system at the VA Palo Alto healthcare system.

Funding and financials

In June 2023, Medivis raised USD 20 million in a Series A funding round led by Thrive Capital. Funds raised will be used to scale the company's engineering efforts, obtain necessary regulatory clearances, and commercialize its technology globally across multiple specialties.
