Finland-based Carbo Culture specializes in biochar carbon removal. The company mimics the photosynthesis process, which uses sunlight and captured carbon to convert agricultural waste into bio carbons. The company’s patented carbolysis reactors convert waste biomass into biochar, locking away carbon for 1,000 years. Carbo Culture’s two main product offerings include carbon removal credits and the biocarbon itself.
The company is developing its first commercial carbon removal facility (C1), with plans to deploy multiple facilities across Nordic countries by 2026. Carbo Culture planned to bring down the cost of carbon removal to USD 200 per CO2 ton by 2024. In August 2023, the company announced the deployment of a new pilot biochar plant in Helsinki, Finland, (R3) to capture 3,000 tons of atmospheric CO2 annually.
