Alkion BioInnovations (formerly Alkion BioPharma) is a French startup developing a patented biostimulation process to produce sweet proteins for the agri-food and nutraceutical markets. The company was formed following the acquisition of Alkion BioPharma by Evonik Industries in March 2017, with a focus on developing pharmaceutical and agri-food solutions.The process involves plant tissue culture in bioreactors, resulting in the growth of stable callus that serves as the basis for growing specific plant organs responsible for sweet protein production. The company's natural sweetener, derived from Mabinlin II in the Capparis Masaaki plant, is 300x sweeter than sugar. Its sweetener portfolio also includes thaumatin, brazzein, pentadin, and stevia. The company also focuses on producing flavors like vanillin, saffron, nootkatone, valencene, and plant proteins like duckweed (Lemna).As of October 2023, all of Alkion BioInnovations' food ingredients were at the proof-of-concept stage. The company aimed to produce ten tons of sweet proteins per year during the initial industrialization phase.Key customers and partnershipsFrom January 2019 to December 2020, Alkion BioInnovations collaborated with FranceAgrimer, a national agriculture agency, and received a EUR 718,000 (~USD 760,756) grant for its NeSweetGen program. Alkion BioInnovations is a biotechnology company that develops an industrial process for producing compounds of interest through the biostimulation of plant cells. Their technology enables the substitution of chemical additives with natural alternatives in the food industry. The company's process involves dedifferentiating plant cells and then redifferentiating them into cells that produce desired secondary metabolites. This is achieved through biostimulation in bioreactors by inducing biotic and abiotic stress on the cells, as well as other specific approaches like transient (non-GMO) expression.
Alkion BioInnovations aims to increase the production of a secondary metabolite of interest by a cell by 2,000 times, compared to 800 times during the Alkion BioPharma era. The company holds two exclusive licenses on patents - one for the production method and another for large-scale bioreactor production. They plan to patent applications on a case-by-case basis. As of 2018, the startup could produce compounds in 50-liter bioreactors and aimed to scale up to 300 liters by the end of 2018. Their bioreactor technology integrates robotics and artificial intelligence to better analyze and control cellular processes.

 Insurance provider Aviva has launched a new telematics-based auto insurance service, Aviva MyDrive, available as a free add-on to customers purchasing Aviva's Online car insurance through a price comparison website. The service aims to encourage safer driving habits in users and potentially offers reduced insurance premiums as a reward.
 The Aviva MyDrive app uses smartphone data to assess the driving behaviour of its users, taking into consideration acceleration, braking intensity, cornering technique, speed, and phone use while at the wheel.&nbsp;
