Avantama

Avantama is a Swiss company specializing in the development and manufacture of advanced materials for electronics applications. The company's core expertise lies in nanoparticle engineering, offering a wide range of nanoparticle solutions for various electronic and optoelectronic applications. Avantama produces tailor-made materials, including single- and multi-element oxides, metal salts, and cadmium-free quantum dots, with particle sizes ranging from five to 50 nanometers. The company guarantees exceptional uniformity and narrow particle size distribution, ensuring precise and homogenous nanoparticles for its customers.

One of Avantama's key product offerings is its perovskite quantum dot (QD) technology, which has applications in the display market. The company's perovskite QDs possess high absorption coefficients, allowing for the creation of thinner pixels with good optical density. This makes them particularly suitable for use in MicroLED displays, offering improved color purity and brightness. In October 2020, Avantama announced that its green perovskite QD film had passed OEM qualification, paving the way for its use in commercial LCD displays.

Two notable products in this category are Avantama N-13, a zinc oxide nanoparticle solution with a high work function, and Avantama N-21X, an aluminum-doped zinc oxide nanoparticle solution with a lower work function. In January 2024, Avantama collaborated with Scrona AG, an ETH Zurich spin-out specializing in electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet 3D printing technology. This partnership successfully demonstrated the processing of Avantama's high-performance perovskite quantum dot ink using Scrona's EHD printing technology. The collaboration aims to enable efficient and cost-effective production of 3D printed MicroLED displays with increased color purity and brightness. This joint effort showcases the potential for Avantama's materials in emerging display technologies and additive manufacturing processes.
